Know your skin type -DRY SKIN- Characteristics: Unlike the ageing dry skin, the young dry skin is mainly characterized by a lack of water in the stratum corneum – the outermost, top layer of the skin. As a result, it appears as lacking moisture, dry, and dull. -OILY SKIN & ACNE- The Characteristics of oily skin tends to be that it is prone to acne or the development of the same. The oily skin is characterized by an oily-shiny appearance and a rough texture; it is prone to having enlarged pores, to the appearance of pimples, blackheads and comedones, and to the formation of light to severe inflammation centers. Some cases may display acne, redness, and increased sensitivity.

Dry Skin

The feeling that people who suffer from this skin condition (Dry skin) complain about, is that the skin feels dry and tight, a sensation which the moisturizer can only relieve for a short period of time.

Causes

A lack of moisture can appear in all types of skin, including oily skin, and mainly derives from the loss of water from the stratum corneum layer of the skin.

The water content of this layer is influenced by various environmental factors, including the levels of moisture in the air, the climate conditions, and the skin-care practices. A low level of moisture in the air, cold and winds, or excessive cleaning of the skin with soap, damage the stratum corneum, and the skin's natural moisturizing factors.

The skin's water content holds many important roles beyond the aesthetic problem or the unpleasant sensation of dry, tight skin. In fact, numerous skin functions may be damaged without a satisfactory level of moisture, and as a result so are its health, wholeness, and appearance.

Therefore, neglecting this condition, in oily skin too, accelerates the ageing process, and causes the loss of elasticity and vitality, as well as the appearance of premature wrinkles.

Solutions

An effective treatment to rehabilitate dry young skin is a treatment that will restore the same damaged components to the skin – those that are, on the one hand, vital for the adsorption of water, and on the other, for the prevention of their evaporation and vaporization to the environment.

Among the most important ones are water absorbents, like amino acids, alpha hydroxy acids, urea, and glycerin – some of which constitute the skin's natural moister factors and some that mimic them; hyaluronic acid – which binds with water and provides the skin with moisture, volume, softness, and elasticity; sealing components – such as fatty acids and cholesterol; vitamins and antioxidants, as well as water, which serve as a temporary moisture factor, and assist in the distribution and absorption of the product's active ingredients.

Oily Skin

Causes

These phenomena are the result of the hyperactivity of the sebaceous glands that are located close to the hair follicle, and produce a larger amount of sebum. The sebum, which is a mixture of oil and wax, serves as a lubricant, which protects the skin from the invasion of bacteria and other damaging factors, softens the skin and prevents the loss of water; but when it's overproduced, it gives the skin an oily, shiny, unaesthetic look.

Solutions

The treatment of oily skin is aimed at balancing and regulating the sebaceous glands' activity, to gently remove the dead skin cells which block the pores, therefore enabling the efficient draining of the fat. The purpose of the treatment is to prevent the formation of inflammation centers, to shrink the enlarged pores, and to heal and rejuvenate the skin.

The specialized products for treating oily skin are based on plant extracts like eucalyptus, clove, mint and chamomile, hamamelis, arnica, calamine, allantoin, and camphor, which have antiseptic and healing properties, and on minerals and other materials which absorb the excess fat, such as sulfur and zinc. Another effective ingredient that is used in advanced products for oily skin is probiotics.

The probiotic bacteria are essential in order to fight diseases that are caused by bacterial inflammations, and to protect the immune system. Food that contains probiotic bacteria has long been known as an essential supplement for the protection and the internal balance of the body, and researches have now shown that applying them to the skin through cosmetic products assists in providing the skin with the same protecting, balancing, and nourishing abilities.

At the same time, the treatment of oily skin nowadays is mostly based on peeling treatments. Over the past few years, innovative peeling treatments have been developed, which enable the rejuvenation and healing of the skin. Those are based on alpha and beta hydroxy acids, retinol, and other components such as vitamin C, which expedite the peeling of the skin in the stratum corneum, increase the production of new cells and balance the skin, and in the long-run are able to succeed in generating a continuous improvement in the skin's appearance.

The treatment progress and the products used to treat oily skin are identical whether it is oily skin in adolescent or in adulthood, and in both cases the purpose of the treatment is regulate and balance the sebaceous glands' activity in order to reduce the secretion of the sebum, and on the other hand, to prevent a lack of moisture in the skin.

Nonetheless, when it comes to ageing skin, increasing the level of moisture in the skin is especially important. Therefore, while balancing the skin, it is important to use a product rich in moisture.
