How will eating more frequently actually help me lose weight?

Eating frequent meals throughout the day helps to control your appetite, prevent overeating at meal times and it can keep your metabolism firing throughout the day.

Eating more frequently (small portions) will also help to keep your blood sugar levels on track. After about 3 hours without food your blood sugar begins to fall. And after 4 hours, your body has already digested whatever you sent down earlier. Once you’ve crossed the 5-hour mark, your blood sugar begins to plummet, and you grab whatever you can to refuel.

That means it’s much more likely that you’re going to eat junk, especially as research seems to suggest that glucose is a vital ingredient in fighting off ego depletion (that’s willpower). And guess what you just ran out of? That’s right, sugar is just another word for glucose, and that’s what you don’t have enough of in your bloodstream. So that means you’re low on willpower and that’s what you need to resist the cookies and go for the celery instead.

Eat every two to three hours. An ideal day of eating should include breakfast, a mid-morning snack, lunch, mid-afternoon snack and dinner. It is important to eat your food slowly, this will prevent you from over eating as it takes your body about 20 minutes to signal your brain that you are full.

Portion control is very important. Your stomach is the size of your fist( if you are over weight and eat a lot more than this, your stomach has stretched and in order to get it back to the size it should be, portion control needs to be applied) and a serving size should be the size of your palm.

For example: Eating a turkey breast with some green beans may not sound like much food, but it is plenty when you will be eating again in a few hours.

Giving the body small amounts of food 5 times a day will provide the body the needed calories to burn quickly.

Often a person thinks that eating only 1 time per day speeds up weight loss. They would be mistaken though. After a while this causes the body to go into starvation mode, eats away at muscle mass, slows down metabolism and makes it harder to lose weight as your body holds onto the fat reserve.

What Happens When You Skip a Meal or a Snack?

*Your body’s metabolism slows down to make the food/fuel you gave it hours ago last longer.
*Your blood sugar drops, leaving you feeling cranky and light headed.
*You overeat at the next meal, to make up for the dip in blood sugar.

Take the number of daily calories to consume and divide it into 5 meals per day in order to determine the best foods to eat throughout the day.
Start eating healthy foods. Stay away from fried foods, processed foods, simple fast food, and carbohydrates. Eat more grilled, steamed and baked proteins, vegetables, whole grains, beans, and nuts and seeds.

Eat fiber first thing in the morning. This is a great way to get the body moving and motivated. Oatmeal and high fiber fruit will boost the metabolism.

Power up with a mid morning snack by nibbling on carrots or celery and a piece of fruit.

Monitor weight loss weekly to determine if additional calories per day need to be cut out.

And there we have it! Eat smaller portions more frequently during the day to keep your weight on the right track.
